10 Mistakes Lots of People Make When Buying a New Car

Published on May 9, 2018 2,757,866 views

According to statistics, most drivers change their car once every six years, which is a pretty long period of time. To take the best out of your car in those six years, to save money and to avoid constant repairing, you’d better avoid ten mistakes many of us make when buying a car.
One day you’ll probably decide to sell your car. That’s why you have to consider some important features. According to Paint supplier PPG Industries, white is the most popular car color in the US with 35 percent of all sold vehicles. It is followed by black with 17 percent, and silver and gray that both got a 12 percent popularity.
In case you want to purchase some good old German luxury brands such as BMW or Mercedes-Benz, you have to be prepared to pay around $17,800 and $12,900 for ten years of maintenance accordingly. US popular brand Cadillac comes next with an average $12,500 maintenance cost for the same period of time.
Additional airbags, a passenger sensing system that can tell the size of the person in the seat and save smaller children in case of a crash, auto-dimming mirrors to reduce the glare coming from headlights at night, head restraints and ABS are some of the things you don’t want to save money at.
Make a check-list of features you need to check and think of where you’ll be driving your new vehicle. Try driving on the highway and park in uncomfortable conditions if that’s what you know you’ll have to do in the future. Examine everything to help yourself make the right decision.
Don’t be afraid to miss “the deal of a lifetime.” You must have noticed those come up now and then, so you shouldn’t let them pressure you into making a wrong financial decision that will affect your budget for years.

SUMMARY
-First, the car brand matters: there are brands that are more or less popular among drivers. Second, you need to think about the vehicle specifications and the engine. Third, don’t forget about its color.
-Think of how much of your family budget car maintenance can make, and decide if you want to spend that much on your vehicle after you’ve purchased it.
-Some drivers don’t smoke inside their cars. In this case, they don’t need an ashtray. An additional corrosion treatment is useless as well because cars already have an anti-corrosion treatment.
-The best choice is a car model that is no more than three years old and already well-known.
-Try to predict how many times you’re going to travel by car, how many passengers will be there, and so on.
-A premium class car will give you better safety, high performance and increased comfort their manufacturers guarantee.
-Gather as much information as possible at reliable websites and among your friends, consult an independent specialist, and test drive your chosen car.
-The best time to buy a car starts in December and reaches its peak in March.
-Try to call or send emails to different dealerships saying you have a better offer and asking if they can beat it.
-Spend enough time to gather information, consulting specialists, and weighing the pros and cons.

Jake Garrett 10 месяцев назад You don't live out in the middle of nowhere... A lot of my friends have actually went off-road doing doughnuts and bottoming out their normal sedans, and its common to see someone taking a SUV or truck (pretty much used the same for having fun), and they'll just be having a blast drifting in the snow during winter. Some of the kids in my high school had them lifted (about 2 to 3 feet, sometimes gutted with huge V8 8 Liter engines for mudding). It was fine, they did it themselves and had great practice welding and fabricating modifications. We even had people working on modifications during ag class since, so even during school people were modifying things. Nothing like going to class and seeing your classmates welding roll cages into their vehicle!

  • Jonas Wegelius
Jonas Wegelius 10 месяцев назад Qazpaz TheLumberJack there are plenty of non-SUV or pickups with very good winter condition capabilities. For example, Fiat Panda 4x4 is excellent in snow. Light, 4wd, and slim tires = success. For icy conditions; tires, electronic aids and ability is more important than the car type
  • Jared Bergsma.
Jared Bergsma. 10 месяцев назад Jonas Wegelius I'm not saying suv's or trucks are the only solution just that the average suv is better in snow then the average car. And plus the additional height helps a lot for seeing over snowbanks
  • Jonas Wegelius
Jonas Wegelius 10 месяцев назад Qazpaz TheLumberJack yeah in North America this might be true but a lot of European cars are great winter cars. One of the best I've had was the mini Cooper. Front wheel drive, skinny tires, light weight. Great chassis. Worst was a Ford people carrier. It got stuck in the snow.
  • Jared Bergsma.
Jared Bergsma. 10 месяцев назад (изменено) Jonas Wegelius shows the difference in regions. I get a lot of snow where I am due to the grate lakes. So trucks and suv's make up a majority of the cars on the road

R 9 месяцев назад (изменено) In the UK people realise the importance of an SUV in order to impress their kids friends when they pick them up for school or their peers at the supermarket. Almost no one in the UK takes them off road. In London they are known as 'Chelsea tractors'. Considering how congested London roads are and how small some of the side roads/parking spaces, could there be a more impractical car than a large SUV. It's a status symbol for most. I just need a car to get from a-b and would rather invest money than sink it into a massively depreciating item that I only use 5% of the day or less.
  • R

  • Coover
Coover 9 месяцев назад I bought an SUV (Toyota Kluger/Highlander) because it suited my needs for something to tow a 6.6 metre caravan, and have a fair bit of storage space. If I wanted something to go off road in, I'd have bought a Landcruiser. Australians buy more SUVs than sedans/station wagons these days (I think the Toyota HiLux is the biggest seller). Narrow streets and tight parking spots aren't a concern here, so the European mentality of needing a small car doesn't exist here. If I lived in Berlin or Tokyo, I doubt I'd even need a car. Our cities are spread out (like US cities), public transport is a joke, so Australians rely on having a car.
  • Don Coleman
Don Coleman 9 месяцев назад R Must be UK terminology, but in Australia an SUV and a 4x4 are two different vehicles. SUVs aren't meant for off road, 4x4s like Toyota Landcruisers and Prados are.
  • Rich
Rich 9 месяцев назад (изменено) Coover - I would have thought that a 21 foot travel trailer would be heavier than the rated towing capacity on a Highlander . My wife has the 3.5 L AWD Highlander and it is only rated to tow 3,500 lbs (US version).
  • Coover
Coover 9 месяцев назад Rich We have a German made "Geist" caravan. They're a lot lighter (and better made) than typical Australian made ones. Ours came in at 1,900kg with fully loaded allowed load and 1600kg empty. The Kluger has a tow rating of 2000kg (4409lbs). Seems odd that the US Highlander and Australian Kluger (same vehicle) have different tow ratings-might be the way the governments measure what's a safe tow rating etc.
  • Rich
Rich 9 месяцев назад (изменено) I'm guessing the difference with the tow rating is that we have the Rocky mountains to contend with, but I don't know how they compare to the Australian Alps.
  • Don Coleman
Don Coleman 9 месяцев назад By global standards, the Australian Alps are just hills. I've driven around western USA, and Switzerland-no comparison.

  • MrThisIsMeToo
MrThisIsMeToo 10 месяцев назад Never buy new is the best rule these days. Even more so than the luxury German cars. They drop so much in the first 2 years. fatboy19831 10 месяцев назад Kestel. By a lightly equipped BMW X3. New. Buy it at the end of the year you will save at least 10 grand. 2 years later if you keep it clean and the miles down BMW will rite you a check for 80% of what you paid for it. I have done it. No accidents and it has to be clean.
  • fatboy19831
fatboy19831 10 месяцев назад Also I keep my cars 15 years 300,000 miles. I buy them new. My 2001 Cherokee cost 21k new. It has 300,000 miles and is still worth 5 grand. My Brz was 26k new. It is six years old. I have enjoyed it for 6 years. Car max would give me 13 grand tomorrow. I am keeping it for at least another 10 years. If you own a new Tesla 3 it is worth $10,000 more than what you paid for it. There are always exceptions to the rule. A 2 year old Rav 4 or Camry is often just as expensive as a new one.

VQ25DETT 10 месяцев назад Yeah try buying a Used Civic Type-R in the U.S. I've seen a lot of listings that went above the MSRP. In fact, you can even sell it for more than what you paid for in some cases. Regular cars, especially luxury brands drop so much value so I buying used can be a resonable solution. If you look at cars as nothing more than a form of transportation, well there's your answer. Buy used. What I'm trying to say is that it's not always the right answer and in some special cases it's exactly the opposite of what you should do. You get a used car, pay more, loose some of its warranty, and there's high chance that it's not broken in correctly.

If the car is 5-6 years most of them has over 120k and that is when all car parts start to fall apart. In a developed country you will lose more money buying an old car but in a developing one at least repairing will be cheaper.
  • Yorgi Storts
Yorgi Storts Неделю назад @Alan Sach That's where I'm at. That's usually a good indicator that the car you're looking into is actually a really good car though. Toyotas and Honda's don't lose much value at all until 3-4 years old or 50k+ miles. Even then, the savings isn't too extreme. One example is a Corolla I was looking at, brand new $18,5k, 2015 with 28k miles, $15k. I'm looking into the Subaru Crosstrek, probably going to buy new at $22.5k because to get any real savings I have to buy a 2016 with 60k miles for just under $18k.

I would gladly put the first 50,000 miles on any good car for 10 cents a mile. Your brother bought vehicle that doesn't hold value.

  • Andras Libal
Andras Libal 9 месяцев назад Your assumption is wrong. I am referring to buying a car that is in working condition. It is possible to buy such a car for around $3000. It's not a new car but it works ok its maintenance is not that expensive and now you can start saving for more important things. Your scheme of an infinitely extended, guaranteed 9% return is a fantasy. If you invest in something riskier to get to the 9% and you don't know what you are doing you are very likely to lose all your money.
  • AeroPR
AeroPR 9 месяцев назад I was responding to "R" who prefers to pay for the use of the car instead of buying, which I assume is a lease. I agree with your view, yet I don't see why an average rate of return of 9% over 35 years in the stock market is unrealistic. Last 30 years of the S&P500 was 10%. Let's say it is the standard 7% adjusted for inflation you would still be close to the million dollar amount. Forget now about investing it and just use that extra amount to pay your mortgage early and you can save tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars in interest. What I am sure we agree on is there are an infinite number of ways you can build wealth with the amount of money burned away in the depreciation or leasing of a new car.

barberwinning 2 недели назад Brand new= lower interest, price flexibility, WARRANTY, sometimes free maintenance, and the ability to take negative equity on an upside trade. That kind of out weighs used cars for ME. No maintenance to pay, no repairs out of pocket, less interest to pay, easier to trade in and upgrade,. U can buy two exact vehicles one used one new a year model apart difference and the used will have a higher interest than the new one so payments actually sometimes come out the same. The bottom line is what or how much ppl want to spend a month. Buy a demo. U basically buying a new car on discount because it been driven but get all the new car perks like warranty, maintenance, etc

  • Robert Kubrick
Robert Kubrick 3 дня назад @Andras Libal - Some vehicles really do retain their value. Toyota and Nissan crew cab trucks for example. You literally can get $8-$10k off MSRP on a new Nissan when buying new, right now. I would gladly pay $5k to put the first 50k miles on a quality vehicle and do it over and over. I get new vehicles, someone else gets the repairs. Fair trade.

Karina 9 месяцев назад (изменено) I bought a "sensible" motorcycle once and always regretted it until the day i sold it and bought what I'd always wanted, basically a race bike :) I've since come to the conclusion that it's better to spend as much as you can afford on the nicest model of whatever you're looking at than compromise with your own happiness. It's a philosophy that has yet to lead me astray in the couple of years since I've put it to practice.

jamie t 9 месяцев назад It's like anything else.   When you buy what you like/want, you treat it better and enjoy it more.   A car is a personal item, just like a shirt or a suit.  If you buy a shirt you don't really like, you wont want to wear it or take proper care of it.   Sure, it's a lot different monetarially, but if you can get the car you actually desire, then do it.  I don't mean a Ferrari, but say you really want an A5, then don't get the A3 because it's a "little cheaper".

  • Greg Rowe
Greg Rowe 8 месяцев назад Its better to buy a more practical, reliable car than go crazy and spend too much on "what you want."  Life is a series of compromises that depend on how much money you earn.  That's the reality of life in general.  The biggest mistake most people make in life is living beyond their means.  They spend too much of their monthy salary trying to buy things they can't afford.  They never save any money and if anything goes wrong, they're panicking because they have no money in the bank to pay for it.  Payday loan companies thrive on people like this.

  • taz874
taz874 10 месяцев назад I guess they factor in reliability costs i mean a old beamer is more likely to break down and require more maintenance. Then fuel wise the beamer is likely to be heavier on fuel than the Clio. But as you pointed out its a Clio RS a regular Clio would probably be better on reliability and fuel
  • Michael Petrakis
Michael Petrakis 10 месяцев назад taz874 Bimmers aren’t that bad in terms of reliability. And as you said it has very bad fuel economy compared to a regular Clio. But the RS model might be kinda worse. Also, (coming from a Renault owner) Renaults break A LOT. And parts are not cheap, especially for newer models..😏

  • Tony Farrington
Tony Farrington 9 месяцев назад (изменено) Michael Petrakis sorry, but I wouldn’t consider sub-200 horsepower to be anywhere near “track ready” or even close to being competition to an e90 330i or 335i. The BMW simply beats it in every way, from comfort to practicality to looks and performance, track or street. I’m sure the Renault is a load of fun, but it simply isn’t comparable to the 3 series. It’s kinda like comparing apples to oranges. The Renault fits a purpose, which is economical transportation, whereas the BMW fits in the higher end luxury/performance car category.
