10 Mistakes Lots of People Make When Buying a New Car

Published on May 9, 2018 2,992,778 views

According to statistics, most drivers change their car once every six years, which is a pretty long period of time. To take the best out of your car in those six years, to save money and to avoid constant repairing, you’d better avoid ten mistakes many of us make when buying a car.
One day you’ll probably decide to sell your car. That’s why you have to consider some important features. According to Paint supplier PPG Industries, white is the most popular car color in the US with 35 percent of all sold vehicles. It is followed by black with 17 percent, and silver and gray that both got a 12 percent popularity.
In case you want to purchase some good old German luxury brands such as BMW or Mercedes-Benz, you have to be prepared to pay around $17,800 and $12,900 for ten years of maintenance accordingly. US popular brand Cadillac comes next with an average $12,500 maintenance cost for the same period of time.
Additional airbags, a passenger sensing system that can tell the size of the person in the seat and save smaller children in case of a crash, auto-dimming mirrors to reduce the glare coming from headlights at night, head restraints and ABS are some of the things you don’t want to save money at.
Make a check-list of features you need to check and think of where you’ll be driving your new vehicle. Try driving on the highway and park in uncomfortable conditions if that’s what you know you’ll have to do in the future. Examine everything to help yourself make the right decision.
Don’t be afraid to miss “the deal of a lifetime.” You must have noticed those come up now and then, so you shouldn’t let them pressure you into making a wrong financial decision that will affect your budget for years.

SUMMARY
-First, the car brand matters: there are brands that are more or less popular among drivers. Second, you need to think about the vehicle specifications and the engine. Third, don’t forget about its color.
-Think of how much of your family budget car maintenance can make, and decide if you want to spend that much on your vehicle after you’ve purchased it.
-Some drivers don’t smoke inside their cars. In this case, they don’t need an ashtray. An additional corrosion treatment is useless as well because cars already have an anti-corrosion treatment.
-The best choice is a car model that is no more than three years old and already well-known.
-Try to predict how many times you’re going to travel by car, how many passengers will be there, and so on.
-A premium class car will give you better safety, high performance and increased comfort their manufacturers guarantee.
-Gather as much information as possible at reliable websites and among your friends, consult an independent specialist, and test drive your chosen car.
-The best time to buy a car starts in December and reaches its peak in March.
-Try to call or send emails to different dealerships saying you have a better offer and asking if they can beat it.
-Spend enough time to gather information, consulting specialists, and weighing the pros and cons.

A lot of my friends have actually went off-road doing doughnuts and bottoming out their normal sedans, and its common to see someone taking a SUV or truck (pretty much used the same for having fun), and they'll just be having a blast drifting in the snow during winter. Some of the kids in my high school had them lifted (about 2 to 3 feet, sometimes gutted with huge V8 8 Liter engines for mudding). It was fine, they did it themselves and had great practice welding and fabricating modifications. We even had people working on modifications during ag class since, so even during school people were modifying things. Nothing like going to class and seeing your classmates welding roll cages into their vehicle!

  • Jonas Wegelius
Jonas Wegelius Год назад Qazpaz TheLumberJack there are plenty of non-SUV or pickups with very good winter condition capabilities. For example, Fiat Panda 4x4 is excellent in snow. Light, 4wd, and slim tires = success. For icy conditions; tires, electronic aids and ability is more important than the car type
  • Jared Bergsma.
Jared Bergsma. Год назад Jonas Wegelius I'm not saying suv's or trucks are the only solution just that the average suv is better in snow then the average car. And plus the additional height helps a lot for seeing over snowbanks
  • Jonas Wegelius
Jonas Wegelius Год назад Qazpaz TheLumberJack yeah in North America this might be true but a lot of European cars are great winter cars. One of the best I've had was the mini Cooper. Front wheel drive, skinny tires, light weight. Great chassis. Worst was a Ford people carrier. It got stuck in the snow.
  • Jared Bergsma.
Jared Bergsma. Год назад (изменено) Jonas Wegelius shows the difference in regions. I get a lot of snow where I am due to the grate lakes. So trucks and suv's make up a majority of the cars on the road

R 11 месяцев назад (изменено) In the UK people realise the importance of an SUV in order to impress their kids friends when they pick them up for school or their peers at the supermarket. Almost no one in the UK takes them off road. In London they are known as 'Chelsea tractors'. Considering how congested London roads are and how small some of the side roads/parking spaces, could there be a more impractical car than a large SUV. It's a status symbol for most. I just need a car to get from a-b and would rather invest money than sink it into a massively depreciating item that I only use 5% of the day or less.
  • R

  • Coover
Coover 11 месяцев назад I bought an SUV (Toyota Kluger/Highlander) because it suited my needs for something to tow a 6.6 metre caravan, and have a fair bit of storage space. If I wanted something to go off road in, I'd have bought a Landcruiser. Australians buy more SUVs than sedans/station wagons these days (I think the Toyota HiLux is the biggest seller). Narrow streets and tight parking spots aren't a concern here, so the European mentality of needing a small car doesn't exist here. If I lived in Berlin or Tokyo, I doubt I'd even need a car. Our cities are spread out (like US cities), public transport is a joke, so Australians rely on having a car.
  • Don Coleman
Don Coleman 11 месяцев назад R Must be UK terminology, but in Australia an SUV and a 4x4 are two different vehicles. SUVs aren't meant for off road, 4x4s like Toyota Landcruisers and Prados are.
  • Rich
Rich 11 месяцев назад (изменено) Coover - I would have thought that a 21 foot travel trailer would be heavier than the rated towing capacity on a Highlander . My wife has the 3.5 L AWD Highlander and it is only rated to tow 3,500 lbs (US version).
  • Coover
Coover 11 месяцев назад Rich We have a German made "Geist" caravan. They're a lot lighter (and better made) than typical Australian made ones. Ours came in at 1,900kg with fully loaded allowed load and 1600kg empty. The Kluger has a tow rating of 2000kg (4409lbs). Seems odd that the US Highlander and Australian Kluger (same vehicle) have different tow ratings-might be the way the governments measure what's a safe tow rating etc.
  • Rich
Rich 11 месяцев назад (изменено) I'm guessing the difference with the tow rating is that we have the Rocky mountains to contend with, but I don't know how they compare to the Australian Alps.
  • Don Coleman
Don Coleman 11 месяцев назад By global standards, the Australian Alps are just hills. I've driven around western USA, and Switzerland-no comparison.

Andras Libal 11 месяцев назад That would cost way way more than buying a used car. Just look at current car sharing services.
  • AeroPR
AeroPR 11 месяцев назад I assume you are referring to leasing a car. Imagine if instead of giving $400 away a month to a bank to lease a car forever you saved and invest that amount from age 25 to age 60 at 9% rate of return. You would be a millionaire at retirement.
  • Andras Libal
Andras Libal 11 месяцев назад Your assumption is wrong. I am referring to buying a car that is in working condition. It is possible to buy such a car for around $3000. It's not a new car but it works ok its maintenance is not that expensive and now you can start saving for more important things. Your scheme of an infinitely extended, guaranteed 9% return is a fantasy. If you invest in something riskier to get to the 9% and you don't know what you are doing you are very likely to lose all your money.
  • AeroPR
AeroPR 11 месяцев назад I was responding to "R" who prefers to pay for the use of the car instead of buying, which I assume is a lease. I agree with your view, yet I don't see why an average rate of return of 9% over 35 years in the stock market is unrealistic. Last 30 years of the S&P500 was 10%. Let's say it is the standard 7% adjusted for inflation you would still be close to the million dollar amount. Forget now about investing it and just use that extra amount to pay your mortgage early and you can save tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars in interest. What I am sure we agree on is there are an infinite number of ways you can build wealth with the amount of money burned away in the depreciation or leasing of a new car.

Keep this car 2 years, maintenance will be cheap becouse it is still young good condition car. If you will sell this car after 2 years, price also will be not much lower. Try imagine brand new premium luxury car around 80 000$ after 3 years your 40 000$ fly away and never back. Then someone buying it for 40 000 and after 2 years will sell fo 28000-32000$

If a sales guy is trying to sell you a car with 50K miles, think about it ... you're whistling past the graveyard rubbing your rabbit's foot. Don't whistle past a graveyard. Don't depend on a rabbit's foot. Buy new if you can afford it and keep the vehicle for 10 yrs. AND who gets excited about buying a used car? I buy used with a hope and a prayer ... and only when I'm desperate for wheels.

Marco Ulibarri 5 месяцев назад @AeroPR true but how would you get around town, bus? Bicycle? If you are single it's ok not to have a car but if you have a family it's a different ball game..
  • Marco Ulibarri
Marco Ulibarri 5 месяцев назад @Red TV Productions exactly!! It all boils down to what kind of lifestyle you want to live. If you have a great job and you can afford it I say..WHY NOT!! the problem arises when their's people that can't afford new cars, they go and buy this very expensive cars and eat ramen noodles and live with mom and dad.
  • Travis
Travis 5 месяцев назад @Marco Ulibarri But thats their own fault. there is no doubt that we do have a different lifestyle here in Australia than there. most people here buy new cars. It is really not good having to tell people you bought a car used. We pay twice the price as you do there as well.

  • Russell Condie
Russell Condie 5 месяцев назад Disagree. The most reliable automobile we ever owned is our Chevrolet Silverado 2000 We purchased new and change the oil when the maintenance light turns on about every 7,000 miles. Wax it once a year and wash it twice a month and vacuum it monthly and in 19 years the maintenance cost not including brakes, tires and batteries has been about $1,000 or about $50 a year in maintenance. If the truck got better gas mileage it would be the perfect automobile.

joyce loke 3 месяца назад depends what car you are getting. I got a new Rav4 15 years ago and it's still doing great, nothing major happens to it, no breakdowns, parts still doing fine. My nephew however, got a new hyundai last year, and that costed him fortune for repairing his windshield around $1000 because "it is a new car so the parts are also expensive" -mechanic at Hyundai. Investing on a good car goes a long way.

  • barberwinning
barberwinning 2 месяца назад Brand new= lower interest, price flexibility, WARRANTY, sometimes free maintenance, and the ability to take negative equity on an upside trade. That kind of out weighs used cars for ME. No maintenance to pay, no repairs out of pocket, less interest to pay, easier to trade in and upgrade,. U can buy two exact vehicles one used one new a year model apart difference and the used will have a higher interest than the new one so payments actually sometimes come out the same. The bottom line is what or how much ppl want to spend a month. Buy a demo. U basically buying a new car on discount because it been driven but get all the new car perks like warranty, maintenance, etc
  • Robert Kubrick
Robert Kubrick 2 месяца назад The real mistake is buying used when the first owner got the best miles driving for 10 cents a mile. You get the repairs. LOL
  • Robert Kubrick
Robert Kubrick 2 месяца назад @Andras Libal - Actually, that's what I do. I buy a new car. I drive it. I subtract 10 cents a mile from the price and sell it. LOL
  • Andras Libal
Andras Libal 2 месяца назад @Robert Kubrick Uber? Cab? In that case it might make sense, you can attract more customers with a new car I guess.
  • Robert Kubrick
Robert Kubrick 2 месяца назад @Andras Libal - Some vehicles really do retain their value. Toyota and Nissan crew cab trucks for example. You literally can get $8-$10k off MSRP on a new Nissan when buying new, right now. I would gladly pay $5k to put the first 50k miles on a quality vehicle and do it over and over. I get new vehicles, someone else gets the repairs. Fair trade.
  • MrTommyboy68
MrTommyboy68 Год назад When I sold cars, I recommended RENTING a similar car for a week. Let the wife go grocery shopping, take the kids where ever, take a weekend trip, THEN decide if the car will fit your needs. My manager had fits because I didn't "close the deal" on the spot, but MOST of my customers came back and either purchased that car or decided it didn't fit their needs and tried something else rather than be stuck with an expensive purchase that the wife will hate and won't suit your needs.

Sjrick 11 месяцев назад some cars you cant rent though. I test drove a Honda Accord and the sale guy said you cant rent them. I currently drive a Mazda 6 and i knew within 3 days i didnt like the car. But by then it was too late. Unfortunately its hard to find new cars to rent. Im looking at the 2019 VW Jetta and you cant rent them. I have been trying hard to pick a car i will like. Id love to drive a coupe but there are none out there comparable to a mid size car.
  • Phrancis5
Phrancis5 11 месяцев назад Yeah Honda doesn't do rental fleet sales or hardly any discounts. They don't have to. It also preserves the used car values for their customers.
  • MrTommyboy68
MrTommyboy68 11 месяцев назад @phransis5: I always sold American iron (and this was s few years ago) but ALWAYS recommend renting a similar car before buying especially if you are changing brands or size (ie sedan to SUV or mini van). If a manufacturer DOESN'T do "fleet" sales, so choose CAREFULLY.
