We review the 2005 Cadillac XLR and think about how this is a slumlord's idea of a "Rich Person's Car."

  • CWDTrixie
CWDTrixie 2 года назад Why bother with mere flames on an XLR, repaint it with a high gloss finish and ghost flames from bumper to bumper and add in a skull variant of the Caddy emblem at the start of those flames and on hood.

  • brian5o
brian5o 2 года назад I think that the XLR would look pretty awesome with flames- either a black XLR with yellow and red flames or a silver or white one with ghost flames. The car would look sweet with a 6-speed manual, too. I hope you do it and post a video of it on YouTube.

  • Peter Anderson
Peter Anderson 2 года назад (изменено) The Northstar was GM's attempt to make something as sophisticated as... oh, let's say the Mercedes M119 that powered the SL 500 from the '90s that the XLR was blatantly trying to rip off. What GM learned from this thought experiment gone too far was that while they could engineer something as sophisticated as ze Germans, they didn't have an army of meticulous men from das Vaterland on the assembly line putting it together. What they had was Bob. Bob, who was perpetually half baked even while at work, but was always up to date on his union dues. Bob could slap together an LS regardless of his level of inebriation because the engine has the tolerances of a hot dog flying down a hallway while still managing to make perpetual nervous grin levels of horsepower. The Northstar, sadly, was a bridge to far for Bob.

  • III
III 2 года назад nonetheless, gotta give it up for the automatic hard top, actually producing a prototype design, when you see these on the road, its rare, and looks much better than the SL, C5, C6, SC430, none come close to the XLR curb appeal today.
  • Bucky Rodgerdodger
Bucky Rodgerdodger 2 года назад Northstar is a fine V8 engine. Why are still so many of them on the road from the 90's and early 2000's if it was so bad?
  • Freddy Chale
Freddy Chale 2 года назад @dstarks80 Being no expert on engines I thought the same. didn't that engine win lots of prices and things? Looks awfully complicated though.
  • StarXLR
StarXLR 2 года назад There are not that complicated. The set up is very simple and not bad to work on either. Certain items are difficult just as every engine has something that is difficult and easy to do. I own, drive, maintain and work on these engines myself so I know them first hand.
  • Novusod
Novusod 2 года назад The Northstar was an attempt to compete with Lexus LS400 32 valve 250hp V8 which debuted in 1990. That engine scared the crap out of GM because they feared the Japanese would soon dominate V8s the same way they were already kicking GM's ass with 4-cylinders and V6s. The first gen Northstar had 275hp so in a way it was a success.
  • StarXLR
StarXLR 2 года назад @Novusod Well it was that way for every other luxury brand including Cadillac, Lincoln, Mercedes, BWM and others. Both Cadillac and Lincoln introduced their own 32 valve V8's for the 1993 model year. Cadillac had the Northstar and Lincoln had the InTech and both were fine engines. The 90's was the era for 32 valve V8's as they have proven to be much more reliable and more efficient running engines over the older OHV pushrod engines. Most new cars and trucks use the OHC style set up for a reason.
  • Bryan Liguori
Bryan Liguori 2 года назад +AMCNorthstar 93 I mean... If ohc is "much more reliable and efficient than ohv/pushrod" (citation needed!), then why did Chrysler and GM stop making their ohc V-8s and continue with only pushrods?
  • StarXLR
StarXLR 2 года назад @Bryan Liguori Because GM and Chrysler did not always make the best decisions. Ford has always used OHC engines since the early 90's and most other foreign brands all use OHC engines over the old OHV engines. It's been around for many years and has its benefits. The Cadillac division of GM made a great 32 valve V8 that lasted 20 years in production and also in several other luxury GM cars. These 32 valve V8's and 24 valve V6 engines are all great engines.
