1989 Honda Prelude Si 4WS : Regular Car Reviews

Published on Aug 20, 2018 395,031 views

Four wheel steering! The rear wheels turn! In the 1980's we were living in the future! This is a Honda Prelude Si 4WS. [UPDATE] Yea, the rear wheels turn in the same direction at first. It's weird, it doesn't feel like that does anything. Yea, the car will "crabwalk" across lanes, but from the driver's perspective, it doesn't feel any different.

I was both giddy, but mourning the loss of mine again. There was nothing wrong with it, in fact it was garage kept and like new with under 50,000 miles. But I had to sell it. If I could afford any car in the world, I would find another one of these before getting my Audi R8. There's nothing else like it. It felt SOOO good, and solid to drive! Not super fast, but super fun anyway. Just beautifully designed and engineered. Best. Car. Ever. I'm still obsessed.

  • Briand Gaudet
Briand Gaudet 8 месяцев назад (изменено) DANGIT. You missed the most important part of the 4WS system: the bit you use when actually driving the car. The rear wheels swivel in the SAME direction as the fronts at low steering angles. That makes the car crab over more or less sideways at highway speeds, and makes for super awesome lane changes. You even show it in your video. Go back and do your homework, then stay after class and clean the blackboards.
  • gabester
gabester 8 месяцев назад Yeah, I don't know how Mr. Regular managed to miss this. Any amount of basic research (or literally just watching the rear wheels) would clue you in to the fact that the rear wheels are always being steered. At a certain point they change direction.

  • RegularCars
RegularCars 8 месяцев назад Briand Gaudet you are right, I did miss that little bit, sorry about that
  • Briand Gaudet
Briand Gaudet 8 месяцев назад Nope. The parallel parallel front and rear wheels make high speed cornering less scary. The car doesn't rotate about its Z-axis so there's less fishtailing.
  • duraiden
duraiden 8 месяцев назад Was looking for this comment. I had an '89, yellow with black interior and a manual. Loved that car. Unfortunately it had seen midwest winters its entire life and the bottom of the car had turned to swiss cheese. I don't know how many miles it had on it when I sent it off since the speedo cable broke at some point, but it was indicating 325k and I still drove it for another year and a half after that.

DrewLSsix 8 месяцев назад inside33 not as obvious as the rest of the stuff he talked about....
  • DrewLSsix
DrewLSsix 8 месяцев назад Briand Gaudet. Its not parallel steering during high speed cornering, it only does that at low angles. Lane changing isnt cornering lol. During high speed cornering the rear wheels turn the opposite direction of the fronts, this gives the impression that the rear end is pivoting and some drivers have noted that its an unsettling feeling. Especially in a fwd car that isnt particularly steerable with throttle.
  • bruce wayne
bruce wayne 8 месяцев назад DrewLSsix yeah it works under differnt speeds. On freeway and over about 30mph it turns same direction as front. So if u come at a turn @30 or less it'll turn opposite. I don't understand why you think you're contributing to this conversation.
  • RegularCars
RegularCars 8 месяцев назад Sorry, I said one thing but thought another.
  • David Sanborn
David Sanborn 8 месяцев назад Mr Reg even showed the page in the owners manual that illustrates this amazing feature - and didn't expand on it. Furthermore every time he said "Four Wheel Drive Steering System" I died a little. I owned an '88 Prelude Si 4WS for five years, only selling it to fund my move to Japan. I deeply regretted letting it go. It's a car that can dance. Best memory is watching a Mustang GT try to follow me on a freeway offramp ... then slide off the road into a nightmarish Florida muck pond disguised as a median.
  • Samuel Thompson
Samuel Thompson 8 месяцев назад Had a 2003 Chevy Suburban 2500 with selectable 4WS ("Quadrasteer"). It was great for tight parking lots and for hauling a trailer as the trailer was more controllable during high speed lane changes - less tendency to fishtail. The catch was if you parallel parked with the trailer, left the 4WS on, and then tried to turn the front wheels hard left and pull out into traffic. Once, the trailer followed the rear wheels to the right and smashed into a telephone pole, busting the trailer's awning. Lesson learned - leave the 4WS off while pulling out of a parallel parking space. GM dropped Quadrasteer after maybe four(?) years as it was expensive to add to their 3/4 ton pickups and Suburban/Yukon XLs, and they couldn't get many takers for an option that was about $3000. We bought ours used, so I'm not sure what the option cost new.

  • Cory Goodman
Cory Goodman 8 месяцев назад (изменено) This is visible when he is shooting the low angle shot of the tires at around 10:39. As the front tire is centered and begins a turn, you can see the back tire begin to turn the same way as the front tire until a certain point, at which point the rear tires begins to double back the opposite way
  • DeCode Er
DeCode Er 8 месяцев назад yeah, noticed this too. In fact I'm noticing regular Car reviews always misses the most important technical and cultural aspect of nearly every car they review.
  • DeCode Er
DeCode Er 8 месяцев назад uuuh , no. I have driven these at speed on highways and back roads, in Japan and here in the states. It most definitely "feels" like the car has bad bushings, low tire pressure, or seg-waying between excellent turn in and sudden oversteer. Why, because if you turn the steering wheel less than 80 degrees, the rear wheels steer in the same direction as the front, but when making sharp back road turns they swivel opposite of the fronts. The transition between the two angles in the rear gives momentary feelings of sliding on ice or oil that one would rather not have to compensate for when hustling along a back road at 80mph, or flying through a sequence of curves on a Japanese highway at 120mph.
