Here's Why the Chevy Bolt is the Uncool Electric Car

Published on Aug 31, 2017 2,317,806 views

The Chevy Bolt has some amazing Tesla-beating numbers: $37,500 base price for 238 miles of range. But inventories are piling up and nobody's buying it. I'm reviewing a 2017 Chevy Bolt to find out why it isn't as cool as the Tesla Model 3.

brandon18054 Год назад +SUPERMAN LIFT How can you say that when the highest score he's given out equates to a C-? That's bullshit, and if it were really the case then I would like to see what the perfect Doug car would be. He certainly couldn't engineer anything better himself.

  • brandon18054
brandon18054 Год назад +dandude720 I get that, but he ranks the cars in the order of the highest overall score so it must be relevant. It would make more sense to give each car an overall score by taking the average of all the individual scores instead of just adding them together.
  • DTHFour
DTHFour Год назад If you average all the individual scores, you get the same thing as if you added them together and moved the decimal point once to the left. 59/100 = 5.9/10
  • Bryan Miller
Bryan Miller Год назад I like the whole idea of a rating system that aids in comparing one vehicle to the next. Problem is every attempt I have ever seen is biased in some way. Consumer Reports practically points everyone to the Toyota Camry even though it sucks at towing, can't go off road and doesn't have enough seating for all buyers but those details never count against the Camry in the final score. The Doug score has obvious holes just the same like where he praises the Bolts acceleration because it is actually pretty quick but then gives it a below average rating of 3. Then he follows that by mentioning the handling is hampered by the tall center of gravity but scores it a better than the acceleration number at a 5. Makes no sense!

Annapolis Green, Inc. 7 месяцев назад I love my Bolt! It has DC fast charging, a great sound system, many safety features, it's very comfortable, has lots of room for hauling stuff, and everybody compliments me on it being cute! As to the comment below, it looks like any other small SUV -- not weird. There is no problem with taking it long distances. I drove it from Maryland to Rhode Island without any issue. I charged a couple of times at DC fast chargers each way and no, I did not spend 11 hours charging. I didn't spend more than an hour charging the couple of times I stopped. That was time to have lunch or dinner so it worked out fine. It's a great car. I believe anybody with negative comments just hasn't driven one yet.

  • PRN 123D
PRN 123D 2 месяца назад Of course Doug score is based on comparison with many other faster cars so this is still quite fair. That being said, Bolt's performance is more than enough for many people. If I'm the one to give it score, I'll give Bolt 1000 of 10, because my car is slower than Bolt.
  • Maserati7200
Maserati7200 2 месяца назад (изменено) Echo Drive NO YOU MORON. Listen and Listen good. I’ll speak slowly because I know it’s hard for you to understand. He gives acceleration scores on an absolute scale, based on 0-60 times. The scale is as follows: Under 3 seconds: 10 points 3.0 to 3.5 seconds: 9 points 3.6 to 4 seconds: 8 points 4.1 to 4.5 seconds: 7 points 4.6 to 5 seconds: 6 points 5.1 to 5.5 seconds: 5 points 5.6 to 6 seconds: 4 points 6.1 to 6.5 seconds: 3 points 6.6 to 7 seconds: 2 points 7.1 seconds and up: 1 point So there’s literally no way he can be biased about a specific car. The Chevy Bolt feels fast in a sense because it has instant torque, so it gets off the line quick. But when it comes to 0-60 it falls off. Get it now, moron?

  • Dominic Amann
Dominic Amann 1 месяц назад (изменено) As always spoken by the guy without kids. Research has indicated that this mostly occurs when a change of role occurs, such as a PD day when the "other" parent takes them to day care - sometimes on the way to work. Kid falls asleep. Parent drives to work.
  • MaxMisterC
MaxMisterC 1 месяц назад @Dominic Amann I have a 24 year old son myself! I don't agree that any parent who forgets their kid in the back of a car, should never have kids.. People make mistakes!! And tho this one seems like a hell of a mistake to make, if Social Services get involved or at least, the police are called to release the child in a timely fashion; then all I'm interested in, is that the child is safe & that the parent are made painfully aware of the HUGE possible dangers of such an innocuous (seeming) oversight...
  • Dominic Amann
Dominic Amann 1 месяц назад @MaxMisterC And I think having such a feature is overdue and will save lives. No-one leaves their kid in the back deliberately. The whole rationale of "preventative deterrence" has no scientific validity whatsoever. The very fact that people make this mistake effectively proves that there is no deterrent large enough to prevent a simple memory lapse. Here is the scenario we used to have. I drive to work every day, and my wife drops my daughter off at pre-school. On a PD day (happens about 3 times a year), I drive her to another day care that happens to be one block from my workplace. My commute is an hour and a half. She falls asleep. I am already driving all the same roads I take to work. On one occasion, I parked in the work parking lot with her still asleep in the back. That was a near miss. I realised and drove across the road to the day care. Do you really think it would improve matters to have my car call social services? Why wouldn't it just nag me - the person in the best position to deal with the situation without freaking out my kid?
  • MaxMisterC

I won't go so far as to say that maybe they shouldn't have kids, but maybe, just maybe they shouldn't be driving.

Daniel Isbell Год назад Electric seats are important for 2 driver cars, but only if they have a memory seat position. If I can't get position memory, I'd rather have manual. My wife is 10" shorter than I am, so the seats move a lot when we switch cars. It's easy in the Miata because there are only 2 adjustments. It's easy in the C250 because it has a memory function. It was terrible when we had a 2014 Mustang because there were 4+ adjustments, no memory, & the seat was just a stupid design (bad hinge location for the seat back).

Daniel Isbell Год назад antuan XII, the current Miata doesn't have electric seats, & I'm fine with that. It's one of the few cars that has gotten significantly lighter from the previous generation to the current one. That was accomplished partially by simplifying the seat adjustment mechanism. When every pound counts, power seats don't offer enough benefit to justify their existence.

  • Mafioso Italiano
Mafioso Italiano Год назад D DeSantis It's also lighter! No electric motors and memories and wiring equals less weight and simpler linkage!
  • Thor Dehr
Thor Dehr Год назад V8-Vorteil, actually you're not entirely correct. Electric power steering uses very little power. That why they are moving to those systems from hydraulic on regular ICE vehicles. (Plus they are incorporated into the stability control and the lane departure functions, features that will soon be mandatory. Climate control makes the car useable. We wouldn't drive a car without it. Plus there's a negligible savings over having your windows open and using the HVAC. Maybe even better with the direct drive compressors these days. So, those two don't really factor into anything. I have cars that have both manual and powered seats. Daily is the manual. Like it way more than when I get rentals several times a month for work and get a powered seat. It's a hassle. I'm starting to see it as a useless option. (For me at least)

  • Nick Porter
Nick Porter Год назад Range is probably the reason, but not because of the electricity usage of the seats, which is absolutely miniscule. It's actually for the same reason you don't see powered seats in a Ferrari F40 or McLaren P1 - they're heavy as fuck. More weight = less efficiency = less range.
  • TheSupradude26
TheSupradude26 Год назад Electric seats are really pretty stupid in a lot of cars. Luxury vehicles which have 15 different parts of the seats that adjust have to have power seats, but my 08 Z06 for instance, doesn't really need to have a motor to move the seat front and back, plus a motor for the seat to go up and down. I'm 6' 6" so every single car I get in, I put the seat all the way back and all the way down. Waiting for power seats is lame and it can take a while haha. The one thing I do like about the Corvette is the memory. After the girlfriend drives it, I push my memory button, and the seat, steering wheel, mirrors, radio stuff, heads up display and the guage cluster info all goes to how I have it set up. I will sacrifice a few pounds to get all that stuff...
