2019 Jaguar I-Pace Full Review

Published on Jun 19, 2018 204,814 views

No throaty growl. No long hood. The all-electric I-Pace is a shocking departure from Jaguar. Could it be the best vehicle the brand has ever made? Tom Voelk travels to Portugal to drive it on road, off road, and on the Algarve Portimaõ Circuit (and never once worries about range).

Jaguar provided running footage, travel, and accommodations for this story.

Tom Voelk is an award-winning automotive contributor to The New York Times. His podcast was the first to win an Emmy Award. He also married way out of his league. Now, stop reading this promotional copy bragging about Tom's photography and editing skills and watch a couple episodes. It's much more interesting.

cadsux 9 месяцев назад Remember the 2014 Rav4 EV with Tesla batteries? It's just not profitable for them. Last April 2018, Jack Hollis, VP of Toyota North America, basically said "the market doesn't justify the expense." Even the Rav4 hybrid has sold only 2,600 units since 2015, while the regular Rav4 sells about 400,000 units annually in the U.S.

  • EV Owner
EV Owner 9 месяцев назад You just named the car companies whose future is in doubt. They waited too long doing only what they know (read: GM, Ford, Kodak, Blockbuster, etc.) and now they are way behind the inevitable switch to EVs. I'd sell your stock of those two companies...
  • cadsux
cadsux 9 месяцев назад In 2017, total EV & PHEV sales of all brands in the U.S. were 200,000 units, with Tesla accounting for 50,000 of those sales. While 50,000 nearly rivals Porsche's total sales, Toyota sold 2.1 million cars (over 109,000 are Prius); Honda sold 1.5 million cars (less 3000 hybrids), so their future is just fine. I would agree that GM & FCA's future is in doubt, since they were bailed out before.
  • EV Owner
EV Owner 9 месяцев назад The Prius, while a successful car, is a hybrid. Toyota wasted hundreds of millions of dollars on a hydrogen vehicle, valuable time they needed for a full BEV. Any car company not making a fully electric car at this point is now a decade behind Tesla. Until Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Ford and other makers make a wholesale commitment to EVs, their future is in doubt. The previously mentioned car companies, including GM, view EVs as a nuisance and they wish EVs would just go away. In 10 years, Tesla will be one of the few car companies around that isn't looking for government protection (you know, like VW) to stay alive.
  • cadsux
cadsux 9 месяцев назад (изменено) Hey I'm rooting for Mr. Musk & other EVs as well. In the meantime, those stocks should be good for another 10 years ;)
  • EV Owner
EV Owner 9 месяцев назад I'm sure you are rooting for all EVs, as I am. Personally, I've owned lots of Toyotas. They would do a GREAT job with an EV but they, like most other car makers, have missed the boat and a decade of learning a new technology is a very long time to recover from. Jaguar has done the most the quickest, in my opinion. Let's hope everyone starts down the path to EVs.
  • EV Owner
EV Owner 9 месяцев назад cadsux, you could use a little more information. The RAV4EV was a compliance car that Toyota only sold in California, just like the GM EV-1 and GM Spark EV. The Tesla guts of the RAV4EV worked so well and created demand such that Toyota had Tesla de-tune the performance - they were concerned it would generate too much demand (just like the EV-1!). Toyota just this week has a TV ad touting the benefits of a car that you do NOT plug in - want the link? Tell me Toyota understands EVs or even wants them. Hybrids (like the Prius) still sell maintenance and repair bills down the road; EVs do not.
  • cadsux
cadsux 9 месяцев назад (изменено) Yes, I'm aware of that & the conspiracy. I remember the 1997 Honda EV Plus and that first Rav4 EV. I live 40 miles from the Tesla plant, so it's always daily news. Thanks.
  • Steve C#
Steve C# 9 месяцев назад What most people do not realize is that early adopter companies often fail. The way I read it Toyota will not sell an electric vehicale until the technology has matured, become more affordable and reliable. This is my MBA side talking.

agus2001 7 месяцев назад @cadsux try again. China is going full electric by 2025, no ifs and buts about that. Being the largest car market in the world several car companies have decided to go full electric as it makes economic sense. ArthurDentZaphodBeeb 9 месяцев назад Beautiful job Jaguar! Highlights how cheap the Tesla interiors are.
  • EV Owner
EV Owner 9 месяцев назад That's opinion, of course. Tesla has a minimalist interior, not a busy box of switches and dials. Coachwork (lots of leather, contrast stitching, LazyBoy recliners) is different for older makers like Mercedes for sure. But that doesn't seem to deter Tesla sales.
  • p W
p W 9 месяцев назад ArthurDentZaphodBeeb It is personal taste I think. I estimate that the okder you are, the more you will prefer the Jag interior, the younger Tesla wins. The building quality of Tesla has become much better than it was. I drove a Tesla model S build in January 2017 and the quality was so much better than the one I saw last, a car build in 2013. The Jag wins on price, but Tesla has a huge advantage because of their own loading facilities, the navigation plans the loading in a very intelligent way. For instance when you drive from London to Glasgow, the nav says where to load. That is never to load up to 100%, but to that level that you arrive with the least time loading, based on the fact that the first part loads the quickest, the last the slowest. It really works. Etcetera, etcetera. By the way, I do not drive Tesla or Jaguar, can't afford them....Both cars are great and the future.
  • MarkusNDS
MarkusNDS 9 месяцев назад (изменено) EV Owner well, we have to be honest: the TESLA fit and finish isn’t on a luxury car price level. Or would you buy a Mercedes-Benz for that kind of money if the fit and finish would that bad?
  • EV Owner
EV Owner 9 месяцев назад My Model S's fit and finish are great, never a problem. If you're equating lots of stitching, lots of leather, knobs and buttons as luxury then by all means get a Porsche. Clearly Tesla didn't try to out-fit a Rolls Royce on their interior. Many times I've observed that coachwork in a Mercedes is excellent. If you want to buy in to the parts and repair payment plan (it's really an annuity for the car maker) labeled Mercedes, be my guest. In a Tesla, however, you're buying the tech, not leather-covered switches.

David Beppler 7 месяцев назад Some people prefer a nice car with a minimalist interior. Some people prefer a minimalist car with a nice interior. None of that matters, jaguar is not building enough cars to matter anyway. Only 20k a year. Tesla builds 8,000 a week.
  • soundslave
soundslave 7 месяцев назад You completely missed the point. The issue is the build quality, not the design. Tesla, and all yank tanks, have plastic interiors that bend and flex, and have panels that never line up properly
