1982 LS Powered DeLorean DMC-12: Regular Car Reviews

Published on Sep 5, 2016 917,457 views

This is a DMC DeLorean with a General Motors LS4 V8. Yes, an LS swap DeLorean is possible and here is a real one! It's fast. Too fast for it's own good.

A sleeper is a car that doesn't look like anything but is actually fast, while a Q-ship is an unexpectedly fast car that's normally well-known for something else. An example would be a BMW M5 - the 5 series is known for being more of a luxury sedan built for comfort, but the M5 is an absolute monster.

  • UGU Zach
UGU Zach 11 месяцев назад (изменено) Nonze I have. MANY times. All 3. The time circuits are what runs on electricity, 1.21 gigawatts of it, generated by plutonium nuclear fission in part 1, and apparently nuclear fusion of random garbage after that. As Doc states in part 3, it's just a regular petrol engine under all the fancy time travel equipment. If it were electric, 1: it would not have made much noise, and 2: it would not have been immobilized by a severed FUEL LINE at the start of part 3.
  • Nonze
Nonze 11 месяцев назад UGU Zach That you know all these facts is rather impressive 👍🏻. But I’m pretty sure he said something like "This one drives electric“ in the first movie. At least that’s what he said in the german translation (I’m german, u know, so I watched the movie in german, obviously, duh) „Der hier fährt elektrisch“ That’s what he said. But I’m definitely going to watch it in English now

Doc replies something along the lines of "no, it's electric, but I need a nuclear reaction to generate the 1.21 gigawatts yadayadayada.." So in that case he was referring to the time circuits and associated electronics(needing the 1.21 gigawatts), not the other normal gasoline powered aspects of the car

  • Bob Papadopoulos
Bob Papadopoulos 4 месяца назад +MrArihaan Pretty sure that was Doc's response to Marty's shocked "This sucker's NUCLEAR?!" while filming the first test. In that context, neither he nor Marty were talking about a car. They were talking about a time machine made out of a car and the time machine aspect of it was fundamentally electric even if it still used a petrol engine, the same way a car is petrol powered despite using electric motors to start the process of the engine running. The time machine was, in effect, electric with a gas ignition. Use the gas to move it 88mph, hit it with 1.21 gigawatts to turn it over, and time machine works. But as a car... still petrol powered.

VestedUTuber Год назад (изменено) You mean LS and a ton of custom work fixes everything. Most LS swaps require a new ECU, new cooling setup, new engine mounts, a new gauge panel, a full-on retune, a beefier driveline, new wiring, a rebuilt subframe where the engine is located, and a lot of time, money and labor. With most cars that get LS swapped, by the time you're done you could have bought an entire second car, and in some cases a third. It's really satisfying when you finally get it running, though.

Doctor Smith Год назад VestedUTuber Don't most engine swaps require those exact same things? I'm sure this swap cost money but 2-3 (new) cars worth? No chance.
  • VestedUTuber
VestedUTuber Год назад +David Regan Depends on the car. On a car designed to accept a V8, the swap could even be a bolt-in. But on a small-displacement MR chassis layout that comes with a V6, there's a lot of custom work that has to be done ESPECIALLY if you want to do it right. This is why LS swaps aren't as common as the popularity of the engine would suggest.
  • Doctor Smith
Doctor Smith Год назад VestedUTuber Of course, and...he hasn't. You're still going to need at least half the things on your list regardless of what you pick.
  • VestedUTuber
VestedUTuber Год назад +David Regan Um... your first post claimed that the amount of work needed wasn't as much as I stated, and your second stated that it's more involved than what I said. I'm honestly kinda confused.
  • Doctor Smith
Doctor Smith Год назад VestedUTuber I'm sorry to hear that I confused you. Any modern engine swap is going to need most of the things you listed. A more compatible car might not need much custom fabrication but ECU? Yes. Mounts? Yes. Drivetrain upgrades? Yes. Wiring? Yes. Fuel pump? Yes. Hopefully you pulled most of that off of your donor car to begin with, otherwise yes it will cost you.
  • VestedUTuber
VestedUTuber Год назад +David Regan I know that. What you're confusing me about is that your previous two posts contradict each other.
  • PillowHugger
PillowHugger Год назад KingOfHiijak They ruin RX-7s.
  • VestedUTuber
VestedUTuber Год назад (изменено) +PillowHugger I have to wonder how many LS-swapped RX-7s there actually are out there. That's not exactly an easy or affordable swap, the car wasn't designed to fit such a large engine. I know that on an RX-8 you can spend as much as $45,000 on such a project (at the bare minimum be prepared to spend at least $25,000), even though the engine itself isn't that expensive. This is due to the fact that you're basically having to gut out the car's engine compartment, relocate a number of components to the trunk, completely replace the electronics and do a lot of custom work with the exhaust. You then need to upgrade the rest of the vehicle to handle the larger, heavier and more powerful engine, and you've basically ruined the car's handling permanently due to the drastic change in weight balance. There's only actually one LS-swapped RX-8 that I know of. I'd assume all three RX-7 models would have similar problems.

Doctor Smith Год назад VestedUTuber Plenty of LS RX7s exist AFAIK. It's an sporty car with nice bodywork whose engines tend to self destruct (at least on the FD). Once you've replaced the rotary engine once or twice why wouldn't you go LS1? Also, the swap works on all RX7 gens, not just the most recent one.
  • VestedUTuber
VestedUTuber Год назад "whose engines tend to self destruct (at least on the FD)." Because people don't take care of them. You HAVE to do an engine rebuild on a rotary every 75,000 miles to replace the Apex seals - they're a sacrificial part. You fail to do that and of course you're going to blow your engine. You also have to redline regularly (not ALL the time, just every now and then for a second or so) to clear out carbon buildup. Anyway, it's still a complex swap. You're going from a 1.3L Turbo Rotary to a much larger V8. I can guarantee you that they're not as common as they seem to be - but still far more common than RX8 LS swaps, which there is only ONE of in the world as far as I know. As for the LS1, I've heard... mixed reviews on that particular engine. I'd look for a different LS if I was going to swap one in.

  • 5150Stunterider
5150Stunterider 7 месяцев назад @VestedUTuber most people dont even use real ls engines they use the 5.3 or 6.0 iron blocks out of trucks because they are so cheap from junkyards (300-600) transmission is only another (150-300),ecu (75-125),and harness (100-150) so a little over a grand and you have most of what you need then once it's done just say its ls swapped
  • VestedUTuber
VestedUTuber 7 месяцев назад (изменено) +5150Stunterider Two things: 1. You can't just drop any engine into any car. If the car doesn't have the mounts for the engine you want to swap in, you have to fabricate new mounts which is costly in terms of labor. Same goes for transmissions. This is actually the #1 money sink for any sort of engine swap, unless the engine you're swapping in is in the same family as the stock engine (4A-GE to 4A-GE TRD as an example) or some sort of exotic racing engine. 2. No, people aren't just taking the block out of an old truck. One of the things with the LS series is that they're very compact engines for their size and can fit into some surprisingly small spaces. For example, if you take EVERYTHING else out of the engine compartment of an RX-8, you can squeeze an LS in there. You can't do that with an old 5.3 iron block.

Sampson Avelar 7 месяцев назад (regarding the last sentence) Yes, you can, since the 4.8, 5.3, and 6.0 truck motors are all in the LS family. Same architecture, same dimensions, same power potential, same weight if you can find one with an aluminum block.

The main issue with Delorean is it shares same chassis as the Esprit. The Esprit uses a renault gearbox because it is the only one that will fit. The transmission and eingine in the v8 esprit is perfect for the delorean.

Charless Holsinger 2 месяца назад @VestedUTuber huh? No....LS swaps are popular because they are compact, light and can swap computer and all....the tuning is to unlock additional power the LS is capable of.
  • VestedUTuber
VestedUTuber 2 месяца назад (изменено) @Charless Holsinger 1. Doesn't matter if an LS swap is easy relative to other engine swaps, it's still an engine swap, which means you need to fabricate custom mounts and exhaust headers. The ONLY time an engine swap is ever a bolt-on upgrade is if you're swapping within model lines, like going from an LS1 to an LS9, or a 16 valve 4A-GE to a 20 valve. 2. While it is true that LSs are compact for V8s, they're still V8s and pretty big ones displacement-wise. You can only make an engine like that so small before it starts tearing itself apart. Flying Miata swaps actually have to move some of the running gear to the trunk in order to make enough space for the engine. And if your car's engine compartment is even smaller than that, an LS swap could even be impossible. 3. While I accept that you can just swap out the ECU, you do have to keep the rest of the vehicle's wiring and circuitry in mind. You could potentially lose some secondary functions if you do that, and in some extreme cases that could even render the car undrivable.
